The Runner- a poem by avsongbird

The Runner

My heart races…
My palms sweat.
My heart pounds hard against my ribs
As my feet come down hard over and over again.
Paces counted, miles behind me.
Blood pounding through my veins.
There’s no thought here as I run full out,
All my cares are left behind.
No bills to be paid, no deadlines to meet.
There’s just me, pushing, striving…
The air I’m breathing,
And the miles left behind.
This is freedom… struggle… dedication.
This is you against yourself.
It’s you pushing yourself to the limits,
To see what you’re truly made of.
This is me alone with the rhythm,
The sound of my breath, my blood, my steps,
No excuses, no distractions, no ties to bind me.
Just the air I’m breathing,
And the miles left behind.
